Highland Coos & Loch Ness Views: A Heartwarming Croft Experience on the Great Glen Way
Nestled above the village of Drumnadrochit, where the Great Glen Way winds its scenic path past the misty waters of Loch Ness, lies a traditional croft overlooking the loch itself that’s been part of one family’s story for eight generations. What began as a small working farm has grown into a cherished piece of Highland heritage - a place where tradition and storytelling live on.
The fields stretch wide and green, dotted with sturdy Highland cattle - or “coos,” as the locals fondly call them. With their long fringes and gentle eyes, they’ve always been the heart of the farm. But as the years went on, Iain began to wonder how he might bring a fresh spark to this treasured place - something that could connect the land, the animals, and the people who visit Scotland’s Highlands.
The wide-open pastures overlooking Loch Ness have long been home to a herd of friendly Highland cattle. Their russet coats, sweeping horns, and calm personalities make them a true Highland highlight - and the stars of Iain’s new farm experience.
Where the Idea Began
Like many great Highland ideas, this one started over a wee dram of whisky.
One evening, Iain and his friend sat chatting by the fire, watching the glow of the flames dance. They talked about farming, of changing times, and of the many hikers and bikers who passed through Drumnadrochit each year on their way along the Great Glen Way.
Then the topic of highland cows came up. Folks come from all over to see "Highland Coos" in the distance. Why not let them meet them up close?
That was the spark.
Bringing the Vision to Life
With a bit of inspiration, encouraged by friends and support from the community-owned Loch Ness Hub, Iain began to shape a new vision for the farm. He wanted to create something that would celebrate both his family’s heritage and the beauty of the Highlands.
The result was the creation of Highland Coo Tours, a welcoming experience where guests can feed, pet, and get up close to these magnificent animals while hearing about their history and role in Highland culture. A highlight for anyone traveling through the Great Glen.
Meet the Stars of the Show
The stars of the show, of course, are Iain’s Highland cows - the majestic coos known for their long, curly coats, impressive horns, and calm, gentle nature.
Among the herd, you’ll meet Lady Jane, her wee calf Mabel, and their fluffy and hairy friends.
Visitors are invited to hand-feed, brush their soft coats, and learn how these iconic animals have adapted to life in the Highlands. You can't help but smile when you realize just how friendly and characterful these “hairy beasts” can be.
You’ll also meet the rest of the animals grazing peacefully on the croft - a real slice of rural life that feels like stepping into a postcard.
Panoramic Views Over Loch Ness
It’s not just the coos that will leave you speechless. From the croft, you’ll be treated to panoramic views over Loch Ness - a sweeping vista of blue waters, forested slopes, and the famous Urquhart Castle perched on the loch’s edge. These views will make you whisper ‘wow!’...
It’s the perfect backdrop for photos, a moment of calm after a day’s hike or ride, or even a quiet pause to wonder whether Nessie herself might be down there, slinking beneath the water’s surface.
The Perfect Stop Along the Great Glen Way
The farm hums with new energy. Hikers and bikers stop by after a day on the trail, families visit for a taste of rural life, and travelers from around the world come to meet Scotland’s most photogenic residents.
The Great Glen Way route passes right through Drumnadrochit, making it easy to plan a quick visit (and perhaps rest your legs!) while enjoying some Highland hospitality.
