Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in DublinArrive in Ireland’s capital, a relatively small and compact city, and an essential part of any visit to the Emerald Isle. From the traditional Dublin pubs to the gorgeous 18th-century Georgian architecture, to its strong literary culture and interesting museums, Dublin truly packs a punch!
Settle into your welcoming hotel that is ideally located in the town centre before exploring the city's foodie scene and lively Temple Bar area, known as Dublin’s “left bank” where you can join the locals, grab a pint of Guinness and listen to live music. Is there a better way to celebrate the start of your trip?

Buswells is located on a quiet street right in the heart of Dublin, next to the "Dáil" (Irish Parliament) and only a 2-minute walk from the Trinity College and the National Museum of Ireland. The boutique hotel is decorated in a traditional old style and you can expect to receive world-famous Irish hospitality.

This stylish hotel is located in the centre of Dublin close to all the must-see attractions of the city. The rooms are described as modern, trendy and stylish and you will enjoy the best cocktails in The Morgan Bar.
Make the most of your visit to Dublin and join a privately guided walking tour (duration: 2h30m) to get to know the highlights of the city, such as Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and Christchurch Cathedral. The tour is organised by one of the city's best-known local historians, Pat Liddy. You will also explore some hidden gems; a church that is not a church, an entertaining representation of a Da Vinci painting, and the story of a mailbox that symbolizes Ireland’s road to independence.
This afternoon there is more time for sightseeing at your own leisure and for those who have Irish roots, the Irish Emigration Museum (EPIC) is a must-visit. Foodies can eat and drink their way through the best food vendors, seasonal produce, and craft beers at one of Dublin's artisan food markets, or explore the cafe culture to get your barista fix.
With a large choice of things to see and do, you may wish to spend an extra night!

This morning, a private transfer (about 40 minutes) will take you to Kilmashogue Forest, where your walk to Enniskerry begins. Stroll through the fragrant woodlands before emerging onto the open hillsides just south of Dublin. Don’t forget to pause and look back for stunning views of the city and its harbor. Your hike starts with a steady climb into Glencullen Forest, offering your legs the perfect warm-up, and continues through the serene Glencree Valley.
Tonight, you’ll stay on the magnificent Powerscourt Estate, one of Wicklow’s most iconic gems located just south of Enniskerry. This is undoubtedly a highlight of your trip. The estate is celebrated for its tranquil countryside setting, sprawling 47-acre gardens, and breathtaking views of Sugarloaf Mountain. Settle into your luxurious hotel and enjoy the next two nights here, with plenty of time to relax and soak it all in.
For your convenience, a transfer will pick you up at Curtlestown Wood, just outside Enniskerry, and take you to Powerscourt. If you prefer, you can opt to walk the final 7 kilometers (4 miles) along rural roads, with a chance to explore the charming village of Enniskerry along the way.
Ascent: 489m (1,604ft) / Descent: 453m (1,486ft)

Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa's 194 spacious rooms and suites form the benchmark by which Irish hotel accommodation is measured. Rooms which average at 700 sq feet/68 sq metres, come with marble bathrooms, rainforest showers, interactive televisions, recessed bathroom TV's, complimentary high-speed Wifi, air conditioning and many other fixtures, fittings and features.
This morning, a private transfer (around 25 minutes) will bring you to Crone Wood, just outside Enniskerry. From here, you’ll set off on what many consider to be the most dramatic section of the Wicklow Way, featuring two of Wicklow’s most iconic landmarks: Lough Tay and Powerscourt Waterfall.
Lough Tay, formed during the Ice Age, is a striking sight, surrounded by steep slopes and marked by a gleaming white beach on its northern edge. Interestingly, the white sand was imported by the Guinness family, whose estate spans part of this stunning area. With a touch of imagination, the lake’s dark waters and white beach resemble a pint of Guinness, earning it the nickname “Guinness Lake.”
After your hike, a transfer will take you from the charming town of Roundwood back to the elegant Powerscourt Hotel. Here, you might choose to unwind and treat yourself to the spa and wellness center, which can be booked either online or locally. It’s the perfect way to soothe your well-earned tired muscles!
Ascent: 609m (1,998ft) / Descent: 531m (1,742ft)

Immerse yourself in the charm of Glendalough, a spiritual and iconic monastic village. A morning private transfer (around 30 minutes) ensures you're ready to explore its magical surroundings.
While not officially part of the Wicklow Way, the Glenealo Valley and Spinc hike is one of Ireland’s most scenic. Start your day in the tranquil Glendasan Valley and follow the historic Miners' Road to the remnants of an old village. From there, climb the wooden steps that lead to a ridge offering jaw-dropping views of Glendalough’s upper and lower lakes. On your way back, pass the magical Poulanass Waterfall, its emerald waters a mesmerizing sight, and finish your journey in the heart of Glendalough.
Spend the afternoon exploring the monastic ruins or savoring lunch in Laragh. Conclude your day with a transfer to the unique Macreddin Village, your home for your final two nights in the Wicklow mountains.
Ascent: 450m (1,476ft) / Descent: 430m (1,410ft)

Other Information
Is it for me?This 7 day self-guided tour is a chance to discover not only the city of Dublin, but also to walk some of the best sections of Ireland’s Wicklow Way. The walks are graded moderate and involve some ascents, however it’s always worth it for the views over mountains, lakes and even the sea on a good day. Stay in superb accommodations, in the centre of Dublin, on the Powerscourt Estate and in the middle of the Wicklow countryside.

Solo Travellers
The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years
We have created this itinerary to showcase the best walks in the area and create the perfect balance of hiking and sightseeing. Graded moderate, the walking distances are manageable for those with a good level of fitness. We suggest that you take walks similar in distance to what you will be doing on this holiday in order to make the most of your time in Ireland. There are moderate elevation gains and losses with a maximum ascent of 450m, and maximum descent of 608m. The daily distance ranges from 13 to 18km with an optional walk of 8 to 10 km on your free day in the countryside.
You will walk on a mixture of old bog roads and forest trails as well as country roads, winding lanes of farmland, and the heather-clad Wicklow Mountains. Road walking is mainly along narrow lanes with little traffic and it reflects the fact that public “rights of way” are almost nonexistent in Ireland. There may be some busier stretches where you will need to be cautious of traffic. En route, you can explore monastic ruins, lush gardens, and 18th-century mansions.
Please note that depending on the time of year and recent weather, the trail may be boggy in places which could reduce your average walking speed.
We have hand-picked superior hotels in each location on this tour and the choice of accommodation is truly one of the highlights. The hotels mentioned in the day-by-day itinerary are subject to availability, and early booking is highly recommended for June-September as this is a very popular time of year.
For the first two nights in Dublin, you will stay in comfortable en suite rooms in elegant hotels of superior 3-star or 4-star standard. You will spend the following two nights in the 5-star Powerscourt Hotel at the renowned Powerscourt Estate & Gardens. Your final two nights will be in the remote Wicklow countryside at Brook Lodge & Macreddin Village, a 4-star resort.
Meals
A hearty, cooked breakfast is served each morning. A typical breakfast would include eggs, toast, bacon, sausage, cheese, yogurt, and coffee/tea with traditional Irish favorites such as black pudding and porridge. Fresh fruits, juices, bread, pastries, and muesli will be served too. Lunch and 5 dinners are not included so you are free to choose from the available options. A very special dinner in the Strawberry Tree is included on your final night. The chef celebrates food that is certified organic, locally sourced, and gourmet. Suggestions for lunch will be outlined in your notes and if you prefer your accommodation may be able to provide a picnic lunch to take with you.
Should you have any special dietary requirements please let us know. We try to accommodate all requirements where possible.
The route is well-waymarked for the most part and easy to follow. This walking tour is best enjoyed between April and October. Unfortunately, due to the restricted opening times of The Strawberry Tree Restaurant at BrookLodge & Macreddin Village, this tour is not available to start on a Wednesday or Thursday. Both Dublin and the Wicklow Way are particularly busy over the summer months, so if you are planning on traveling between June and August, we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment, especially when traveling in a group.
In our opinion, one of the best times to visit this region is in spring when colourful wildflowers are in bloom. This area is known as the Garden of Ireland for good reason and the Powerscourt Gardens look incredible at this time of year. July and August are the busiest months and accommodations tend to fill up fast, but you're also more likely to encounter a local festival in Dublin and you can appreciate long hours of daylight. For a quieter experience, September is an ideal month and it has the advantage of the crowds beginning to thin.
Irish weather is typically unpredictable year-round so be prepared for any conditions and you will be pleasantly surprised. No matter what month you choose to travel, being in the Wicklow Mountains means it can get wet and windy at any time of year. It is important that you check the local weather forecast before setting off each day. Wintry conditions may be experienced at the start and towards the end of the season.
Dublin is one of the easier European cities to get to with direct flights leaving from Boston and Los Angeles. Other cities too, check Aerlingus.com
Traveling from the airport to the city centre is easy using the excellent bus service (duration: 25 min) or taking a local taxi (duration: 35 min). For general travel information for Ireland check the Transport for Ireland website.
On Day 3 you will be transferred from your accommodation in Dublin to the start of your walk into the Wicklow Mountains.
A private transfer is included from your final hotel to either Dublin Centre or Dublin Airport, you can then make your onward journey from here.
Daily door-to-door luggage transfers are included in the price of your trip, allowing you to set off on each walk carrying a light backpack.
At Macs Adventure we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Ninety-nine percent of the time they will only transfer one bag per person, but the allowed weight ranges from anything between 15 and 20kg per bag, depending on the tour you are taking. We do not have control over the limits that these providers set. Therefore, it is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags (including shopping bags or boots) and if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees) which we must respect.
On this trip, we ask you to keep your luggage to a maximum weight of 20 kilograms per item, and just one item of luggage per person.
The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes.
Please be prepared by packing all the necessary items. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, a day pack, a sun hat, and sunscreen.
