In the middle ages, the news of the Camino de Santiago spread all over Europe and Pilgrims from the UK and Ireland would sail down to A Coruña and Ferrol to start their pilgrimage to Santiago. Today we use the route from Ferrol as it is the more scenic route of the two. The Camino Inglés is one of several walks to Santiago, but this is the only one to start off at the coast, which means the first couple of days walking are rewarded with wild coastal scenery before delving into the heart of the Galician countryside. The path then turns inland, through the rural farmlands of Galicia and gives you the chance to really enjoy this region of Spain, it’s people and cuisine. After passing the peak at Bruma-Meson do Vento it is downhill most of the way into the vibrant city of Santiago. Its stunning Romanesque Cathedral signals the end of your walk.

Day 1 Arrive Ferrol

You can fly into Santiago de Compostela or La Coruna from several points in Europe. From either of these points, there are several buses a day to get you up to Ferrol. Ferrol is full of history, with an abundance of prehistoric findings, right up to its use as a naval stronghold in various wars. The architecture reflects this depth of history and the city centre is a delight to wander around. Add to this the excellent seafood and friendly locals and you have one of Spain’s hidden gems.

Day 2 Ferrol to Pontedeume 18 miles / 28 km

In the morning there will be a transfer to Neda. This shortens the original stage by around 13km (8mi). The route takes you to the Galician coast. You will pass by several beaches, with the Ria de Ferrol in view, before reaching the small maritime town of Pontedeume. Situated on the banks of the River Eume and surrounded by hilly countryside, you enter the picturesque town via the Pont-de-Eume, a bridge that gives the town its name.

Ferrol to Pontedeume without transfer (standard): 28km/17.5mi (Ascent: 378m/1,240ft | Descent: 386m/1,266ft)

Neda to Pontedeume with optional transfer*: 15km/9mi (Ascent: 283m/928ft | Descent: 277m/909ft)

*Be aware that if you use the organised transfer service, you may not receive the Compostela at the end of your Camino, as you will not have walked the appropriate distance to qualify for it. Please let us know if you do not wish to use the transfer.

Hotel Camino do Eume

Beautiful and recently restored hotel in a historic building in the old town of Pontedeume, with two facades from the 17th and 19th centuries. The hotel overlooks the Ría de Pontedeume and has a beautiful garden where you can relax after your hike. The restaurants and cafes of this lively fishing village are within easy reach.

Hotel Montebreamo

The Hotel Montebreamo is located in Puentedeume, a coastal town in the province of A Coruña, Spain. The hotel is a beautifully modernised country house with 6 spacious and clean rooms with very comfortable beds.

Balcón del Eume | Hotel

The Balcón del Eume is a small and charming guesthouse located in the Fragas do Eume and on the English Way to Santiago de Compostela. It is the ideal place to discover the medieval village of Pontedeume, enjoy the beach of Cabañas and admire the Fragas do Eume.

Day 3 Pontedeume to Betanzos 13 miles / 20 km

On this stage you will be surrounded by the green hills and rural villages of Galicia, leaving the coast and its port cities behind. As the Camino Inglés is still an insider's tip on the Pilgrim's Way, it is not overcrowded and you can enjoy the Galician countryside to the full. You can expect some ups and downs on this section - but you will be rewarded with spectacular views. A historic highlight of the English Way awaits you in Betanzos.

Hotel Villa De Betanzos | Hotel

With more than 30 years of experience in the tourism sector, Hotel Villa de Betanzos was born from the illusion of creating a new family business and the history of the town. Furthermore, the building in which Hotel Villa de Betanzos has been reconstructed is considered a work of historical and monumental interest, as it was built in 1914 as the Manuel García Naveira Asylum School.

Day 4 Betanzos to San Paio de Buscás 19 miles / 31 km

A transfer will take you to Presedo in the morning. This will shorten the original 31km stage by around 11km (7mi). Today's route is mostly uphill through a green landscape of meadows and fields, passing many farms and Galician villages. You will pass Hospital de Bruma. This town is a historic milestone on the English Way, as the routes from Ferrol and La Coruña converge here.

Betanzos to San Paio de Buscás without transfer (standard): 30.8km/19.1mi (Ascent: 605m/1,985ft | Descent: 323m/1,060ft)

Presedo to San Paio de Buscás with optional transfer*: 20km/12.5mi (Ascent: 651m /Descent: 328m)

Day 5 San Paio de Buscás to Sigüeiro or Marantes 11 miles / 18 km

One of the greenest landscapes in Galicia awaits you. The route takes you along rural tracks, through forests, and mostly downhill. There are hardly any villages along the way, so you can enjoy nature at a leisurely pace.

Depending on hotel availability you'll stay in either Sigueiro or Marantes. This could mean that your walk on this day is either slightly shorter than planned, or slightly longer with a shorter following day. Please view the itinerary and daily descriptions for more details.

Day 6 Sigüeiro or Marantes to Santiago de Compostela 10 miles / 16 km

Santiago de Compostela, the destination of your Camino de Santiago, is coming closer and closer. At first, the route runs along a busy road, then through small villages. You are slowly approaching the capital of Galicia, as you can see from the change in the surroundings. You will probably be getting more and more excited - soon you will be standing in front of the great cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Countless pilgrims have reached the cathedral before you and the arrival can be overwhelming. Take a moment to stand in front of the cathedral and enjoy the moment. Afterwards, we recommend that you visit the pilgrims' office to collect your well-deserved Compostela, which you can only get if you have walked at least 100 kilometres on the Pilgrim's Way and collected two stamps per day. The evening mass is also worth seeing. Should you feel that you will miss this, we always recommend an extra night in order to attend.

General Information

Pilgrim Passport & Compostela

Your Pilgrim Passport (Credencial del Peregrino) and scallop shell will be waiting at your first accommodation. The Passport isn’t just practical—it’s a beautiful record of your Camino journey, officially issued by the Church of St. James. Along the route, you'll collect stamps (sellos) from albergues, churches, cafes, and more. Each stamp is a colorful reminder of your journey. To earn your Compostela Certificate in Santiago, you must walk at least the final 100 km, with your stamps serving as proof of this accomplishment.
