Based in three of the island’s most attractive villages and towns— Fornalutx, Soller and Valldemossa— enjoy flexible walking with plenty of time for long lunches of tapas and wine. Exploring the pretty villages and beautiful coastline of northwest Mallorca this is a relaxed walking holiday in the Tramuntana Sierra. Staying overnight in boutique fincas and hotels, this is the perfect way to explore Mallorca at your own pace. Following donkey trails and pilgrim paths, wind your way through wooded valleys, fragrant citrus groves, and along beautiful coastline to wonderful viewpoints in the mountains. Experience for yourself areas which inspired poets and musicians like the English novelist Robert Graves and famous composer Chopin.

Day 1 Arrive Fornalutx

Arriving into Palma Airport, you will be transferred to the small village of Fornalutx (45m), in it’s wonderful hilltop location.

Check into your boutique hotel and enjoy dinner at one of the many terrace restaurants with views of the pine-clad foothills of Puig Major.

Fornalutx Petit Hotel | Hotel

Located on a tranquil, traffic-free street in Fornalutx, this beautiful hotel was previously a convent and has now been beautifully restored and modernised into a charming little boutique hotel.

Sa Tanqueta | Apparthotel

The hotel has a magnificent view of the Serra de Tramuntana and its stone walled terraces of olive and orange trees – the area’s traditional produce. Each of the 14 apartments has air conditioning/warm air heating, a telephone and Wi-Fi connection, satellite television and a safe. There is a large swimming pool where you can take a dip and cool down. It has a large terrace where you can sunbathe whilst enjoying the view of the surrounding countryside.
You will be encompassed with the tranquility around you.

Day 2: Choice of walks from Fornalutx 8 miles / 11 km

You have two choices today. The first is a walk from Fornalutx on the Cami de s’Alzina Fumadora. This cobbled bridle path winds its way steeply up between olive and orange trees, but you are rewarded with excellent views of the mountains surrounding the valley.

The other walk is a slightly easier option as it is mostly downhill, from the Cuber reservoir to the L’Ofre pass for 360 degree views over to the Bay of Palma and Bay of Alcudia. Then descend down through the Biniaraix Gorge on an ancient pilgrim’s trail with some striking cave formations, back to Fornalutx.

Loop Walk from Fornalutx: 11km, 3-4 hrs, Ascent/Descent 560m

Walk from Cuber to Fornalutx: 12km, 4-5 hrs, 415m Ascent, 1025m Descent

Day 3: Walk Fornalutx to Port de Soller, Tram to Soller 6 miles / 9 km

Leaving Fornalutx, you head towards the pretty village of Soller today. Walk the Cami de Sa Capelleta through shaded pine trees to the Sanctuary of “Sa Capelleta”. Continue along zig-zagging paths through tranquil olive groves and through the beautiful Sa Figuera valley to Port de Soller.

This wide bay lined with a sandy beach and plenty of seafront restaurants is the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere before continuing to the village of Soller by the old-fashioned tramway. (payable locally).

It is one of the oldest establishments in Mallorca (opened in 1880) and retains all the character and charm of the island’s most traditional architecture.

Day 4: Free Day in Soller 6 miles / 9 km

You have various choices to tempt you for your following two days spent in Soller. A short walk from Port de Soller with views over the coast takes you to the Cap Gros lighthouse and the area of Muleta Gran with its impressive defence tower. Or for the ultimate picnic walk, enjoy a climb to the Torre Picada watchtower, before following a path below the Puig Balitx cliffs to a fantastic look-out point over Sa Illeta island.

A final option, combining boat and tram trips with walking, takes you through a lush valley, and along a beautiful coastal path to Cala Tuent, before returning by boat to Port de Soller, and then tram to Soller. Please note that the boat required on this day does not operate on a Sunday.

Port de Soller to Muleta Gran & Cap: 9km, 3-4 hours, Ascent/Descent 210m

Walk to Torre Picada: 9km, 3 hours, Ascent/Descent 350m

Walk to Cala Tuent: 14km, 5-6 hours, 690m Ascent, 740m Descent

Day 5 Free Day in Soller or Train to Palma

Enjoy one of the other walks or you may choose to simply relax and enjoy the sun! Another popular option is to take the vintage train to the capital, Palma. This wooden, narrow-gauge train has been in operation since 1912 and takes you back in time as it clatters through the Mallorcan countryside.

Day 6: Walk to Deia, bus to Valldemossa 7 miles / 10 km

Following the Cami del Castillo, head to the previous artist’s colony of Deia. The route is a lovely one following the GR221 and with superb sea views for part of it.

With it’s honey-coloured houses, Deia has inspired many artists and musicians since the 19th century, including the English poet and novelist Robert Graves. Today it is home to many little art galleries as well as some top-notch restaurants, where you can try local specialities and tapas, before taking one of the regular buses to Valldemossa (payable locally).

Formerly a stately manor house, the Sa Vall Interior Hotel is set in a beautiful natural setting on the outskirts of Valldemossa and has an open-air swimming pool, extensive gardens, and stunning views of the Sierra de Tramuntana.

Day 7: The Archdukes Pass from Valldemossa 9 miles / 13 km

After visiting Mallorca in 1867, Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator was so taken by it that he was inspired to create this route from the beautiful village of Valldemossa. It takes in various spectacular vantage points and also provides an insight into traditional mountain industries, passing several charcoal ovens and lime kilns.

The area is privately owned and forms part of an important conservation project that protects local wildlife, including endangered species like the black vulture (voltor negre), it’s in the name Muntanya del Voltor, meaning Mountain of the Vulture in Catalan (the local language).

Valldemossa is commonly referred to as one of the prettiest villages in Mallorca, it has motivated artists and composers alike, one of which was Chopin, who lived there from 1838-39. Visit the Carthusian monastery or enjoy sweet treats such as ’coca de patata’ (a sweet potato cake) from one of the traditional family bakeries.
